50 Cent contribute fee from Ghadafi to Charity: Rapper 50 Cent joined fellow headliners in donating to charity the money he earned for a performance organized by the family of Libyan dictator Moamar Ghadafi, E! News reported Wednesday.
"In light of the ongoing events in Libya, 50 Cent will be making a donation to UNICEF, which is providing vital relief supplies to meet the needs of women and children at risk during this crisis [in Libya]," a rep for the entertainer said in a statement. The singer, whose real name is Curtis James Jackson III, is under fire for his performance at a private concert, organized by family members of Ghadafi, at the 2005 Venice Film Festival.
He joins singers Mariah Carey, Usher and Beyonce who were also listed as recipients of payouts from the North African dictator. They received $1 million each for performing at a New Year's Eve concert on the Caribbean island of St. Barts in 2009, reportedly for Moamar Ghadafi's son, Hannibal.
After the embarrassing source of their payment was revealed, they all announced last week that they would donate their fees to charity. It was also revealed that Canadian singer Nelly Furtado would donate the $1 million she received for a performance "for the Ghadafi clan" four years ago in Italy. "In 2007, I received 1million$ from the Qaddafi clan to perform a 45 min. Show for guests at a hotel in Italy," she wrote on Twitter. "I am going to donate the $."
